International public tender for the design of new seventh bridge over Rio Douro, for the new route between the metropolitan areas of Campo Alegre (city of Porto) and Vila Nova de Gaia (city of Candal), included on the new route of the “Rubino” tramway line.

The proposed bridge is intended to carry bicycle, pedestrian and LRT flows.

The Bridge

The design proposal for the Tender, developed by the Team, consists of four elements: reconversion of the space in the vicinity of the Faculty of Architecture (Porto – Campo Alegre), crossing of the Douro River with the main bridge, access to the metro-train station in the vicinity of the “Arrabida Mall” (Vila Nova da Gaia) and the pedestrian footbridge to the regular roads (Vila Nova da Gaia).

The primary intervention is the crossing of the Douro River, which was designed using the “arch-portal” bridge type, entirely constructed using metal fabrication.

Cycle and pedestrian traffic and two metro-tram tracks are supported by the metal fabricated deck, which in turn is supported by the main three-dimensional lattice beam.

The total length of the three-dimensional lattice beam is approximately 667 m and is supported by two metal fabricated steel trestles, which are supported by deep foundations built away from the banks of the Douro River, at a distance of 400 m from each other. The two trestles support the deck and a lattice beam at a height of 53 m from the Rio Douro.

The transitional viaduct between the main works and the ‘Arrabida Mall’ station overlies Avenida Edgar Cardoso (Vila Nova da Gaia), is curved and consists of three spans designed as a pre-stressed lightened plate, with a total length of 96 m.

The pedestrian walkway features a design in plan number “4” and allows the transition from the height of the bridge deck to the level of regular road Rua do Cavaco, adjacent to Avenida Edgar Cardoso (Vila Nova da Gaia).
